The Mission:To maintain and secure National registers and Registration Forms of Birth, Death and Marriages of Guyanese people, and of Foreigners occurring in Guyana and to supply members of the public upon request , extracts of entries recorded with minimum of delay.
The General Register Office is a department of the Ministry of Home Affairs and is located at the Guyana Post Office Corporation. It operates in accordance with Chapters 44:01 Births and Deaths and 45:01 Marriages of the laws of Guyana. Formerly a Micro film unit used to be located at the Ministry of Health; it has now been relocated at the Guyana Post Office Corporation building Robb Street.
Before 1st July 1987, the Registration of Births and Deaths were done throughout the country in the registration districts, for example, Georgetown had eleven (11) Districts, Plaisance nine (9) which included Lodge and Kitty.
On 1st July 1987, a new structure of the General Register Office and a new system of Registration of Births and Deaths was introduced.The overall objective was the re-organization and restructuring of the GRO as well as the entire system, for the collection of information on Births, Deaths and Marriages and the issuing of the certificates. The Organisation operates under four sections – Receipt and Dispatch, Operations (Transcription and Search), Data processing and Administration. The Micro file Unit operates with the Operation Unit..
Together with the Ministry of Health, registration centres were created in all the ten (10) regions. The majority of those created were hospitals and health centres.
