Amending a Birth Registration?
Are you:
- Correcting your child’s first or middle name before his or her 1st birthday?
- Correcting your child’s first or middle name before his or her 1st birthday?
- Legally changing you or your child’s name?
Modifying a birth certificate?
Information displayed on a birth certificate are retrieved from a person’s birth registration. Since information on both documents must be identical; a change on one document requires a change on the other.
Amending the Name of an Infant
If a correction or a replacement is required for an infant’s name; his/her parent(s) must complete and submit GRO’s amendment form.
One Year and Older
A sworn affidavit is required if the intended alteration to the child’s name does change it’s pronunciation.
For example:
- Alli to read Ally or Ali
- Sharran to Sharon
- Eon to Eyon or Ian
- Shawn to Sean, Shaun
If no name is given to a child under the age of one year; his/her parent(s) may submit a completed amendment form at any General Register Office.
Adding an Additional Name
A court order from the nearest magistrate to the applicant’s residence is required for the addition of a name. A copy of the the court order must me submitted to the closest GRO branch.
