Birth registration


It is every parent’s responsibility to register the birth of their child. Register your baby’s birth within 14 days of birth at the hospital or health centre where the child is born.

Registrations can be completed after 14 days via the General Register Office or sub offices up to one year for the birth registration of any newborn, after which a late registration would need to be done.

 

The following are required for successful birth registration:

  • Name of child (Nicknames are not allowed)
  • Correct spelling of name
  • Parent(s) National Identification Card(s)
  • Marriage Certificate (If applicable)

What is a Birth Certificate?


A birth certificate is a legal document that establishes:

  • Correctly spelled full name
  • Place of birth
  • Date of birth
  • Nationality

Married Mothers

The following applies to married mothers:

  • If the child’s father is the applicant’s husband, she may present a marriage certificate for verification purposes.
  • The registrar should be notified if the applicant’s legally married husband is not the father of the child.
  • The father of the child may visit the registrar to sign the father’s column.
  • The applicant may leave the father’s column blank.

Single Mothers

Although an applicant may be unmarried at the time of conception, she may still have a partner who wishes to be acknowledged as the child’s father

  • The applicant(s) may register the child’s birth at her bedside.
  • The applicant may return with her partner to the place of delivery to finalize registration.
  • The applicant and her partner may visit the General Register Office to complete and submit a birth registration form.
  • The applicant has until the day before the child’s first birthday to include her partner’s name on the birth registration.
